Bible Reading / Up Against a Wall: The Life of David

Day 5 | Is Comfort Your King?

Read:

Nobody wakes up thinking, “I hope I feel uncomfortable today!” But sometimes comfort and convenience become something we guard, something we chase after—something we idolize.

We might live in an age of instant gratification, but this isn’t a new phenomenon. Generations of people, even as far back as biblical times, have fallen for the lie that God promises us safety, security, and material blessings.

That couldn’t be further from the truth, and David was no exception. He faced lots of hardship, pain, and regret in his life, but they led him to deeper, more resilient faith.

The Psalms give us a unique look at how David processed these struggles. He wrote many of the Psalms—essentially poems or songs where he talks to or about God. Some of them are full of praise, some are full of questions and anguish, but together they show us how God was forming David’s faith.

Psalm 144 shows us something David learned about God’s character: his love and presence can’t be measured by our circumstances. The battles we face may be difficult, but God is always with us, and he’s our source of victory. That’s something to celebrate.
