Bible Reading / Up Against a Wall: The Life of David

Day 14 | The Difference God Makes

Read:

Today we see David move from worrying only about his own life to stepping into action for the benefit of the people of Keilah. What caused the shift? He was walking with God. He didn’t just decide to do it of his own will, but after a conversation with God. God’s direction gave David bravery and strength—and that trickled down into the growing number of men who were following his lead.

Saul got word of David’s whereabouts and began to hunt him down. Instead of relying on his own wisdom, or resorting to scheming or panicking like he had in the past, David simply talked to God—and God kept David one step ahead of Saul and his quest for revenge. He even put a literal mountain between them!

We were never meant to focus on ourselves. That sounds counter-intuitive by our cultural standards, but it’s essential for followers of Jesus. God’s desire is always to seek the good of others. Even when our world is crashing down, we need to refocus our attention away from our own troubles and turn our attention to others. Like David, God is your defense, and he can still use you to make a difference, even through your difficulties.
